PROCEDURES FOR PREPARATION | Always load and unload on a level surface. | | Keep everyone clear of the work area. | | Keep attachments secure in transport mode - always lower loader bucket. | | Stop machine, shift controls to neutral and lock. | | Check all hydraulic controls; turn off and remove ignition key. | | Do not perform any maintenance on machine unless you are authorized and qualified. | | Attach a "DO NOT OPERATE" tag to the steering wheel before performing any task. | | If the engine should not be started, make a note on the "DO NOT OPERATE" tag and cover the ignition switch with tape or a tag. | | Work on machines only in a clean area with plenty of light and ventilation. Be careful to remove any slip hazards from area. | GENERAL OPERATING SAFETY GUIDELINES | Never run the engine in an enclosed area! Exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide - an odorless and deadly poison - serious injury or death may result. | | If fuel is spilled, move machine away from area and avoid creating any source of ignition. Clean up spilled fuel immediately. | | Never store or use fuel near an open flame. Fuel may ignite, leading to serious injury or death. | | Refuel only in well- ventilated areas. | | Do not operate engine without a muffler. | | Inspect exhaust pipe and muffler and clear any obstructions. | | Do not operate engine if air cleaner or cover is missing. | | Do not choke the carburetor to stop engine. | | Never run engine at excessive speed and do not tamper with governor springs and settings. | | Do not touch or work near hot mufflers. Serious burns may result. | | Always keep hands and feet clear of moving parts. | | Disconnect negative cable from battery when machine is stored to prevent accidental starting. | PROTECTIVE CLOTHING | Always wear protective clothing - everything the job requires. | | Wear a rubber apron, gloves and goggles when working with batteries. | | Wear a face shield when disassembling cylinders from machine. | | Do not sand, grind or cut without a NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator. | | Do not weld, flame-cut or braze with a NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator. | | Keep any loose clothing away from moving parts. In addition, if you wear your hair long, take every precaution to avoid getting hair tangled in moving machinery or tools. Wear a hat and tuck in long hair. | PREPARING FOR MAINTENANCE | Never work on the electrical system unless you are authorized to do so, and are familiar with the details and special handling required. | | Always disconnect the battery before working on the electrical system. | | When removing the battery, disconnect the ground cable first. When installing the battery, connect the ground cable last. | | Never allow open flame around the hydraulic system. | | Always clean up spilled fluid immediately. | DANGER:
Hydraulic fluid under pressure can penetrate the skin and cause serious injury. Fluid leaks under pressure may not be visible. Use a piece of cardboard or wood to find leaks but do not use bare hands. Always wear a face shield for eye protection. If any hydraulic fluid is ingested, seek medical attention immediately - serious injury or death may result. | PREPARING MACHINE FOR USE | Always turn off engine when refueling and never smoke while handling fuel. Gasoline is flammable and can explode, causing injury or death. | | Never cut or weld on fuel lines or fuel tanks!! Gasoline vapors are extremely flammable and can explode, causing injury or death. | | Handle all solvents and chemicals carefully, according to manufacturers' procedures and guidelines. | | Always work in a well-ventilated area. | | Know the location and proper operation of fire extinguishers. | | Remove all trash and debris from the machine. | | Never store flammable materials on or near the machine. | | Inspect machine for fuel leaks and repair any problems prior to operation. | | Always use a non-flammable solvent when you clean parts. | | Store all flammable materials away from your work area. | WORKING WITH BATTERIES | Always disconnect the battery before working on the electrical system. | | When removing the battery, disconnect the ground cable first. When installing the battery, reconnect the ground cable last. | | Batteries contain sulfuric acid. Always wear a face shield to protect your eyes. Wear rubber gloves and an apron to protect skin. | | If battery acid contacts eyes or skin, immediately flush area with clean water and seek medical attention. | | Lead-acid batteries produce flammable and explosive gases. Keep open flame, welding arcs, sparks and lighted tobacco away. Serious injury or death may result if a battery explodes. | | Use a flashlight when checking battery electrolyte level. Always check with the engine turned off. | | Never attempt to charge or jump-start a battery if it is frozen. Always warm batteries to room temperature before attempting charge. | DANGER:
Battery fluid is corrosive. Always clean up any spilled electrolyte and flush area with water. In addition, batteries can produce flammable and explosive gases. Always work in a well-ventilated area and use caution. Always wear a face shield for eye protection.
