What is a Pneumatic Chipping Hammer?

A pneumatic chipping hammer is a type of power tool that uses a piston to generate force through a metal hammer point to chisel away and break through materials. For example, you might use a chipping hammer to break up some concrete that you need to remove.

The main thing to remember with chipping hammers is that each tool is designed to balance breaking power with weight and maneuverability. For example, a relatively lightweight and maneuverable chipping hammer might weigh 10 pounds and utilize a 2” cylinder. It may strike at a fairly high rate, but not generate as much breaking power as a larger, heavier model.

Chicago Pneumatic produces chipping hammers in multiple sizes, including 2”, 3” and 4”. You might use a 2” model to prep a surface or for its maneuverability for an elevated work area. In contrast, you might choose a 4” model if you need to do heavy concrete demolition.

Some things to consider when you choose a chipping hammer include:

Size

It can be tempting to get the biggest chipping hammer you can afford, but that can be a mistake. The bigger the chipping hammer, the more strength it will take to operate and the more fatigue you will experience. If you need to do more fine work or need to operate the tool for an extended period of time, a smaller option might be better.

Weight

Usually, the bigger the chipping hammer the heavier it will be. Weight is an important consideration because it will generally indicate how much force the machine can deliver. While you want a smaller machine for maneuverability, if you want to really break up heavy materials you need to pick a model with enough weight.

Durability

There are plenty of cheap chipping hammers out there. But if you are going to use the tool for work, it’s better to pay a little more for a quality product that will hold up to serious use.

Handling

Different grip designs, like pistol grip or D-grip, are more comfortable for specific applications.
